What is the Ascendant (Lagna) in Vedic Astrology?
In Vedic astrology, your Ascendant — also called Lagna — is the zodiac sign that was rising on the eastern horizon at the exact moment you were born. Unlike your Sun sign, which changes roughly every month, the ascendant shifts approximately every two hours, making it uniquely personal to your birth time and location.
The ascendant is considered the single most important point in your Vedic birth chart. It determines your physical appearance, natural temperament, health patterns, and how the world perceives you. While your Moon sign governs your inner emotional world, and your Sun sign reflects your soul's purpose, your ascendant is the lens through which both express themselves.
How We Calculate Your Rising Sign
Our calculator uses the Swiss Ephemeris — the same astronomical engine used by professional astrologers worldwide. We apply the sidereal (Lahiri) ayanamsha, the standard system used in classical Vedic astrology, to determine the exact degree of your ascendant based on your birth date, time, and geographic coordinates.
- Precise coordinates — we geocode your birth city to exact latitude/longitude
- Timezone-aware — we automatically detect the correct timezone for your birth location
- Sidereal calculation — uses Lahiri ayanamsha, the standard for Vedic charts
Why Birth Time Matters
The ascendant changes signs approximately every 2 hours. A difference of even 10–15 minutes can shift the degree enough to change sub-periods (dashas) and house cusps. If you're unsure of your exact birth time, check your birth certificate or hospital records — it makes a significant difference.
