When someone asks "what's your zodiac sign?" in India, nine times out of ten they mean the Rashi — the Moon sign. But when an astrologer sits down to read your kundali, they start with the 1st house. The Lagna. The rising sign.

The 1st house — or Tanu Bhava as the classical texts call it — is the most personal point in the chart. It changes every two hours. Two people born on the same day, same city, but four hours apart can have completely different Lagnas. Parashara treats those as different people with different bodies, different temperaments, different life paths.

Quick Answer

The 1st house in Vedic astrology, called Tanu Bhava (house of the body), governs physical appearance, personality, health, vitality and longevity. It is determined by the zodiac sign rising on the eastern horizon at the exact moment of birth — the Lagna. BPHS lists its significations as physique, appearance, intellect, complexion, vigour, weakness, happiness, grief and innate nature. The 1st is the only house that is simultaneously a Kendra and a Trikona.

Core significations

What the 1st house represents in Jyotish

Tanu Bhava — the house of the body. But Parashara's scope is far wider than the body alone.

"

Physique, appearance, intellect (or the organ of intelligence, i.e. brain), complexion of the body, vigour, weakness, happiness, grief and innate nature are all to be guessed through the ascending Rāśi.

- BPHS · Ch. 11, Sl. 2

Nine significations in one sloka. Physical, mental, emotional — the 1st house spans all three layers.

The 1st house belongs to both groups at once. Every other Kendra is only a Kendra. Every other Trikona is only a Trikona. The 1st is the only exception.

The rising sign

What is the Lagna?

Lagna (लग्न) means 'that which is fixed or attached at birth.' It is the zodiac sign rising on the eastern horizon at the exact moment and place of your birth.

The zodiac is a 360° band. The Earth's rotation sweeps the entire band past the eastern horizon once every 24 hours. That means a new sign rises roughly every two hours. Your Lagna is whichever sign was crossing that horizon when you were born.

This is why birth time accuracy matters more for the 1st house than for any other house. The Moon stays in one sign for about 2.5 days. The Sun stays for 30 days. But the Lagna changes every two hours. Siblings born on the same day but hours apart can have completely different charts.

The 2-hour rule

A new Lagna rises every ~2 hours

Over 24 hours, all 12 signs complete the cycle. Two siblings born hours apart on the same day can have different rising signs — and therefore different bodies, different careers, different paths.

Parashara treats them as different people with different kundalis.

Lagnesha placement

The Lagna Lord — most important planet in your chart

The Lagna lord (Lagnesha) is the planet that rules the sign on your 1st house cusp. It is the single most important planet in Vedic astrology.

"

Should Lagn Lord be yuti with a malefic, or be in Randhr (8th), 6th, or 12th, physical felicity will diminish. If he is in an angle or trine there will be at all times comforts of the body.

- BPHS · Ch. 12, Sl. 1–2

The rule is direct: Lagna lord in a Kendra (1, 4, 7, 10) or Trikona (1, 5, 9) → physical ease and good fortune. Lagna lord in a dusthana (6, 8, 12) → reduced vitality and more obstacles.

The 9th and 10th are the strongest placements for the Lagna lord. The 6th and 8th are the most challenging. But remember — one placement is never the whole story. Aspects, conjunctions and dasha periods modify everything.

Graha placement

Planets in the 1st house — classical effects

A benefic in the 1st house gives a pleasing appearance and physical ease. A malefic challenges it.

"

A benefic in Lagn will give a pleasing appearance, while a malefic will make one bereft of good appearance. Felicity of the body will be enjoyed if Lagn is drishtied by or yuti with a benefic.

- BPHS · Ch. 12, Sl. 4

BPHS maps the rising decanate to body parts: head, eyes and ears for the first decanate, neck to navel for the second, pelvis to feet for the third. Planets in the 1st house affect the body part corresponding to the decanate of the Lagna degree.

Reading the house

What makes the 1st house strong?

A strong 1st house means physical vitality, a coherent sense of self and resilience through life's cycles. Classical analysis looks at four things, in order.

"

If Jupiter, Venus or Mercury is also in an angle or trine, the native will be long-lived, wealthy and intelligent.

- BPHS · Ch. 12, Sl. 5–7
1

Lagna lord's placement

Primary

An exalted or own-sign Lagna lord in a Kendra or Trikona is the gold standard. A debilitated Lagna lord in a dusthana is the weakest position. Everything else falls on a spectrum between these two extremes.

2

Planets in or aspecting the 1st

Modifier

A benefic in Lagna strengthens appearance and ease. A malefic challenges it. Jupiter's aspect on the 1st house is considered one of the most protective influences in the chart.

3

Nakshatra of the Lagna degree

Fine detail

A Lagna at 17° Virgo falls in Hasta, ruled by the Moon. A Lagna at 3° Virgo falls in Uttara Phalguni, ruled by the Sun. Same sign, different nakshatra, different flavour. The nakshatra lord adds a secondary planetary influence.

4

Dasha periods

Timing

The 1st house is activated most strongly during the Mahadasha of the Lagna lord. During this period, themes of identity, health and self-direction come to the foreground.

The 1st house doesn't have the drama of the 7th or the prestige of the 10th. But every prediction in Vedic astrology begins by establishing who the person is — and that is the 1st house.

Your Lagna determines which planets are benefic and which are malefic for you. It sets the house lordships. It defines the starting point of every dasha analysis. Without the Lagna, there is no chart.

Your Lagna is where the map starts. Everything else tells you where you might go.

Your Lagna is the most personal point in your kundali. Two people born minutes apart can have meaningfully different charts — which is why birth time matters more than birth date.

Common questions

Frequently Asked Questions

The 1st house (Tanu Bhava) indicates physical appearance, personality, health, vitality, longevity and innate nature. It is determined by the rising sign (Lagna) at the time and place of birth. BPHS lists nine significations: physique, appearance, intellect, complexion, vigour, weakness, happiness, grief and innate nature.
The Lagna is the zodiac sign rising on the eastern horizon at the exact moment of your birth. It is calculated using your birth time, date and place. Because the Earth rotates through the entire zodiac in 24 hours, a new sign rises approximately every two hours, making birth time the most critical input for chart calculation.
The Lagna changes approximately every two hours, compared to the Moon which stays in one sign for 2.5 days and the Sun for 30 days. Even a 10-minute error in birth time can shift the Lagna to a different sign in borderline cases, completely changing the chart's house lordships and predictions.
The Lagna is determined by the rising sign at birth and changes every two hours. The Moon sign (Rashi) is determined by the Moon's position and changes every 2.5 days. The Lagna governs the physical body, appearance and outward personality. The Moon sign governs the mind, emotions and inner nature. Vedic astrology gives primary importance to both.
Vedic astrology uses the sidereal zodiac (based on fixed star positions), while Western astrology uses the tropical zodiac (based on the seasons). The difference between them — called Ayanamsha — is currently about 24 degrees. This means your Vedic Lagna is typically one sign back from your Western Ascendant.
Jupiter in the 1st house is classically considered the most auspicious placement. It gives wisdom, good health, pleasant appearance and a righteous disposition. If Jupiter is in its own sign (Sagittarius or Pisces) or exaltation (Cancer) in the 1st house, it forms the powerful Hamsa Mahapurusha yoga.
Malefic planets in the 1st house challenge physical ease and can create a more difficult early life. Saturn gives a serious, mature persona and delays in self-development. Rahu creates an unconventional identity and restless ambition. Mars in the 1st creates Mangal dosha. However, malefics in the 1st can also give tremendous drive and resilience — the effects depend on sign, aspects and dasha periods.
