The moment someone hears their 8th house is active or afflicted, the first word that comes to mind is death. But the 8th house holds far more than that one signification. It governs longevity - meaning it also determines how long you live.
The 8th house goes by three classical names: Randhra Bhava (house of vulnerability), Ayur Bhava (house of longevity), and Mrityu Bhava (house of death). It is both a Dusthana and part of the Moksha Trikona - the liberation axis formed by the 4th, 8th and 12th houses.
The 8th house in Vedic astrology, called Randhra Bhava (house of vulnerability), Ayur Bhava (house of longevity), or Mrityu Bhava (house of death), governs lifespan, sudden events, in-laws, inheritance, occult knowledge, secrets, and deep transformation. BPHS (Ch. 11, Para 9) lists its significations as longevity, battle, enemies, forts, wealth of the dead, and things past and future. It is both a Dusthana and part of the Moksha Trikona.
What the 8th house represents in Jyotish
Each of the three classical names reveals a different dimension of what this house actually does.
"Randhr Bhava indicates longevity, battle, enemies, forts, wealth of the dead and things, that have happened and are to happen (in the past and future births).
- BPHS - Ch. 11, Para 9
Randhra Bhava - from randhra, meaning a hole, a gap. This is the house of vulnerability, of the places in your life where things can fall through. Sudden events. Unforeseen crises.
Ayur Bhava - from ayus, meaning lifespan. BPHS devotes an entire chapter (Ch. 19) to the conditions of the 8th lord in the matter of lifespan. A well-placed 8th lord is a long-life indicator.
Mrityu Bhava - from mrityu, meaning death. Both literal and metaphorical - the end of a phase, a relationship, a career, a version of yourself.
Notice: longevity comes before death in the classical list. The ancients were more interested in how long you'd live than in when you'd die.
What the 8th house governs
Longevity, inheritance, in-laws, occult knowledge and sudden events - each operates through the 8th house.
Longevity and the body's resilience. A strong 8th house doesn't mean you'll die early. It means the chart has robust longevity indicators. BPHS explicitly states: if Randhr's Lord is in an angle, long life is indicated (Ch. 19, Para 1). The 8th also governs chronic illnesses, surgeries and the body's ability to recover.
Inheritance and hidden wealth. The 8th is the 2nd house from the 7th - meaning it represents your spouse's family's finances, assets that come through marriage, insurance, legacies, and anything you receive without directly earning. A strong 8th with Jupiter can indicate significant wealth through inheritance.
In-laws and Mangalya. Phaladeepika explicitly lists Mangalya - the longevity of the husband during the wife's lifetime - as an 8th house subject. The nature of the in-laws, the sasural dynamics, the relationship after marriage - all 8th house.
Occult, research and hidden knowledge. Astrology, tantra, tarot, psychology, forensic investigation - anything that requires going beneath the surface. Jyotishis often have Jupiter or Ketu in the 8th.
Sudden events and life interruptions. Sudden gains, sudden losses, accidents, windfalls, unexpected transfers. The 8th house governs all events that arrive without warning.

The 8th lord's placement across the 12 houses gives BPHS very specific predictions.

Sarala Yoga and Viparita Raja Yoga
This is the 8th house's hidden strength that most articles bury in a footnote.
Viparita Raja Yoga - meaning 'reversed' Raja Yoga - forms when the lords of the dusthana houses (6th, 8th, 12th) are placed in each other's houses. Sarala Yoga is specific to the 8th lord: when the 8th lord sits in the 6th or 12th house.
The logic is classical: when the lord of difficulty occupies another house of difficulty, the two negatives cancel. The person still faces hard things - but they come out stronger each time.
Conditions for Sarala Yoga: (1) The 8th lord must be reasonably strong - own sign, exaltation or friendly sign preferred. (2) It should not be afflicted by severe malefic influence. (3) The native needs to be running a dasha that activates the yoga.
A debilitated 8th lord in the 6th with Rahu on top doesn't activate the yoga cleanly - it creates more confusion than strength.
What makes the 8th house strong or weak?
Never judge longevity from the 8th house alone. The Lagna lord's strength, the Moon's condition and Saturn's placement all contribute.
When your astrologer says your 8th house is active - the honest answer is: that's worth understanding, not fearing.
The 8th house is a complicated house. It carries real challenges. But it's also the house that BPHS associates with longevity first - before death. It's the house of in-laws and inheritance. It's the house that creates Sarala Yoga and protects you precisely because you've been forged in difficulty.
