That confusion is fair. The same placement is praised in one sloka and cautioned in another, and most blog posts quietly pick one and ignore the rest.
The 5th is Putra Bhava: intelligence, children, romance, vidya (learning) and purva punya (merit carried from earlier lives). Its ruler is the Panchamesh. When the Panchamesh sits in its own house, the house is looking after itself.
And this is where it gets interesting. Classical texts do not give a flat verdict here. They give a conditional one.

That is also where a lot of articles go wrong. They quote the harsh half and drop the final line. A text that ends on "virtuous and dear to friends" is not trying to scare you.
Chart reading is about proportion. Sl. 53 says the placement is only as good as the company the lord keeps. It does not say the placement is bad.
Intelligence, Study and Creativity
When the lord of the 5th is rooted in the 5th, intelligence tends to feel native rather than borrowed. You are the person who understands a concept by playing with it, not by cramming.
