Introduction
The line that stops everyone is the first one: deprived of happiness through wedlock.
If you are single, you wonder if it means you will never marry. If you are engaged, you wonder if you should call it off. If you are married, you wonder what you did wrong.
Let us slow this down, because the same sloka also says famous, virtuous, honourable, adventurous and wealthy. Nobody tweets that half.
The 7th house is Yuvati Bhava: spouse, partnership, contracts, the public. The 6th lord (Shashthesh) is the planet of service, rivals, illness and obligation. When it sits in the 7th, the work of adjusting to another person becomes a real, daily job.
In this guide we will cover what BPHS says, how the marriage line shows up in life, the public success side, the Dainya Yoga exchange, and what strength and dasha change.
Quick answer
6th lord in the 7th house puts the house of rivals, service and ailments (Ari Bhava) inside the house of marriage and partnership (Yuvati Bhava). BPHS says the native "will be deprived of happiness through wedlock. He will be famous, virtuous, honourable, adventurous and wealthy" (Ch. 24, Sl. 67). In practice: marriage needs more effort and adjustment than usual, while public life, reputation and income do well. A full exchange with the 7th lord in the 6th forms Dainya Yoga.
What "6th Lord in the 7th House" Actually Means
Identify the sign on your 6th cusp and note its ruler. For a Gemini lagna the 6th sign is Scorpio, so Mars is the 6th lord. For a Sagittarius lagna the 6th sign is Taurus, so Venus is.
If that planet sits in the 7th house, you have this placement.
BPHS Ch. 11 tells you what kind of house the 7th is:
"The Kendras are specially known, as Lagn (the ascendent), Bandhu Bhava, Yuvati Bhava (the descendant) and Karm Bhava (mid-heaven)." (BPHS, Ch. 11, Sl. 33-36)
So the 6th lord sits in a Kendra, an angle. A dusthana lord in an angle cannot hide. Its results are visible, active and tied to other people.
This is different from the 7th lord in the 6th house. There, the spouse's house is pulled into service and conflict. Here, service and conflict walk into the partnership.
The Core Classical Result (BPHS Ch. 24, Sl. 67)
The sloka, in full:
"If Ari's Lord is in Yuvati Bhava, the native will be deprived of happiness through wedlock. He will be famous, virtuous, honourable, adventurous and wealthy." (BPHS, Ch. 24, Sl. 67)
Count the descriptors. One difficult (deprived of happiness through wedlock), five strong (famous, virtuous, honourable, adventurous, wealthy).
That ratio matters. The text is not saying a person with this placement lives badly. It says the one area that struggles is the marital happiness line, while the rest of public life does well.
Deprived is a strong word. In real charts it more often reads as "marriage does not come easy" than "marriage does not come".
Marriage and Partnership
What does it look like?
A couple where both work long hours and the relationship runs on logistics. Who picks up the child, whose parents visit this month, whose job relocates first. Love is present. Ease is not.
Or a marriage that is delayed because family expectations, career timing or a first match that did not work out kept pushing it back.
The 6th lord is also the planet of service. A partner linked to health, law, service or a demanding profession is common. Sometimes the partner is the one carrying the heavier daily load.
If this is you, a few habits do more than any ritual. Talk about money and duties early. Divide chores in plain words. Fix the small irritations before they harden into a case file. Couples with this placement often do well once they stop treating the marriage as another project to manage and start treating it as a place to rest.
On the partner's health: BPHS does not say the spouse will be ill. Do not read it that way. Check the 7th lord, Venus and the navamsa before drawing any conclusion.
Public Life, Fame and Wealth
Now the half nobody quotes.
The 7th is the house of the public. A 6th lord there gives energy in dealing with clients, negotiating, competing and winning in the open. Adventurous fits the person who takes on a venture others avoid.
Think of the consultant who builds a name through client work, the lawyer who becomes known in her city, or the entrepreneur who finds the right business partner after a rough first one.
Virtuous and honourable point to a strong code of conduct. People with this placement are often known for keeping their word, partly because their own marriage taught them what a broken one costs.
The Dainya Question: When It's a Full Exchange
Most readers will not have an exchange, because it needs two planets in each other's houses.
When two house lords occupy each other's houses it is called Parivartana. Phaladeepika calls the exchanges among the 6th, 8th and 12th lords Dainya Yogas, and number six on its list is:
"(6) the lord of the 6th in the 7th and the lord of the 7th in the 6th" (Phaladeepika, Dainya Yogas)
Phaladeepika says such a person "will encounter obstacles in all his ventures" (Phaladeepika, Yoga Adhyaya, v. 33).
That is a tough line. Read it in proportion. It shows where effort will be needed, which here is partnership. Strong planets, good aspects and a supportive dasha change a lot. Many people with this exchange build solid partnerships by working at them from the start.
Strength: What Changes the Outcome
Own sign or exalted 6th lord in the 7th gives the best version. Public success leads, and the marriage line is mild.
Debilitated 6th lord in the 7th needs a check for cancellation of debilitation (Neecha Bhanga). Without it, partnership adjustment is heavier and disputes with business partners are more likely.
Combust 6th lord, too close to the Sun, quiets results until its own dasha.
Aspected by Jupiter is a real help. It steadies the marriage and widens the public reputation.
Conjunct Saturn, Mars or Rahu brings delay, tension or a partner with a hard schedule.
When the Results Actually Show Up
The 6th lord's Mahadasha and Antardasha are the main windows. Wedding talks, a rough patch, a client dispute, a business partnership forming or breaking.
The 7th lord's dasha, and Saturn or Jupiter transiting the 7th, bring marriage themes to the front.
6th Lord in the 7th House vs Other Placements
| Placement | Core theme | How it differs from the 7th house |
|---|---|---|
| 6th lord in 7th house | Work and rivalry enter marriage, public success | The comparison point here |
| 6th lord in 5th house | Children and friend friction (Sl. 65) | Pressure on love and creativity |
| 6th lord in 6th house | Own house, kin friction (Sl. 66) | Fights with relatives, not spouse |
| 6th lord in 8th house | Sickly, inimical, others' wealth (Sl. 68) | Hidden matters, not partnership |
FAQ
What does 6th lord in 7th house mean?
Your house of work, rivals and obligation sits inside your house of marriage and partnership. BPHS says marital happiness is reduced, while fame, virtue, honour, adventure and wealth are strong.
Is 6th lord in 7th house good or bad?
It is mixed. Public life and wealth are favoured, and marriage needs extra effort. Because the 7th is a Kendra, the results are visible and workable. Planet strength and dasha decide the balance.
Does 6th lord in 7th house cause marriage problems?
The sloka speaks of reduced happiness in wedlock, which usually looks like delay, heavy schedules or constant adjustment. It does not forbid marriage. Check Venus, the 7th lord and the navamsa too.
What kind of spouse does 6th lord in the 7th give?
Often a partner tied to service, health, law or a demanding profession, with a strong sense of duty. Temperament depends on the sign and planet. The sloka does not describe the spouse in detail.
Is 6th lord in 7th house a Dainya Yoga?
Only as a full exchange: 6th lord in the 7th and 7th lord in the 6th together. Phaladeepika lists it as Dainya Yoga number six. Without the reciprocal placement, the plain BPHS result applies.
What if the 6th lord is afflicted in the 7th house?
Expect more delay in marriage, sharper arguments and trouble with business partners. Jupiter's aspect, a strong Venus and a supportive dasha ease the pattern.
Closing
So is 6th lord in the 7th house a threat to your marriage? Not on its own. It describes someone who will be respected in public and who has to work for ease at home.
Treat your partner as the one meeting on your calendar that is never cancelled.
