Your phone buzzes. It's an ex you haven't heard from in two years.
The builder wants your signature on the agreement this week.
And a relative has forwarded a WhatsApp message: "Venus and Mercury both retrograde. Don't sign anything. Don't buy anything. Don't propose anything."
Frankly, most of these forwards flatten a rich idea into a list of fears. And this time the timing is unusual, because Venus is already vakri (retrograde), and Mercury joins it on October 24.
In this guide, we'll cover the exact dates, what vakri really means in Jyotish, and practical do's and don'ts for love, money and contracts.
Quick answer
Venus (Shukra) turned vakri on October 3 and goes direct on November 14, 2026. Mercury (Budh) turns vakri on October 24 and goes direct on November 13. Both move backward in Tula (Libra) for 21 days together. Classically, a vakri planet is strong, not broken. So use this window to review, repair and renegotiate. Delay big launches, new commitments and impulse spending until both planets turn margi (direct).
The Dates: Venus and Mercury Vakri, October-November 2026
All times below are IST, New Delhi, from Drik Panchang, in the sidereal (Lahiri) zodiac that Vedic astrology uses.
| Event | Date and time (IST) | What it means |
|---|---|---|
| Venus turns vakri | Oct 3, 12:45 PM | Shukra starts moving back in Tula, through Chitra |
| Mercury-Venus conjunction | Oct 7 | Speech and affection meet in Tula |
| Mercury turns vakri | Oct 24, 12:41 PM | Budh starts moving back in Tula (Swati-Vishakha region) |
| Sun-Venus conjunction | Oct 24 | Venus is combust, right as Mercury turns |
| Mercury turns margi | Nov 13, 9:22 PM | 21 days of Budh vakri end |
| Venus turns margi | Nov 14, 5:57 AM | 42 days of Shukra vakri end |
Two things to note.
First, you'll see Western sites say "Scorpio and Libra" and "November 13". That's the tropical zodiac, which sits roughly 24 degrees ahead of the sidereal one. In Jyotish, both planets are in Tula. And 5:57 AM IST on November 14 is still November 13 in the US.
Second, as I write this on October 9, Mercury is still margi. You have about 15 days to finish paperwork you've been postponing.
Parashara calls this backward motion vakra (BPHS Ch. 27). And honestly, neither BPHS nor Phaladeepika, as far as I could find, carries a rule that says "don't sign anything". What they do give us is a way to read the motion itself.
What "Vakri" Actually Means in Jyotish
Vakri (or vakra) means "crooked". The planet hasn't really reversed. From Earth, it appears to slide backward because of relative speeds. Jyotish treats that apparent motion as a real quality of the graha.
In the Brihat Parashara Hora Shastra (Ch. 27, v. 21-23), Parashara lists eight kinds of motion for a graha. Vakra comes first, and carries the highest motional strength of the eight: 60 units, against 45 for fast (char) motion and less for the rest.
Mantreswara agrees. In Phaladeepika (Ch. 4), he says the five non-luminous planets get Chesta Bala (motional strength) when retrograde. A retrograde planet, in his words, is strong even if it sits in a weak sign, provided its rays are bright.
So here's the reframe.
Vakri is not "bad". It is strong, internalised and slow to deliver. A vakri planet makes you go over the same ground again. Venus revisits what you value and who you love. Mercury revisits what you said, signed and calculated.
That's why the right word for this window is not "avoid". It's "review".
Why This Window Is Unusual: Two Planets, One Sign, One Sun
Retrogrades aren't rare. Mercury turns vakri about three times a year. What makes this one different is the stacking.
- Venus is in its own sign, Tula. Phaladeepika (Ch. 1) gives Venus 0-5 degrees of Libra as moolatrikona and the rest as own sign. A strong planet turning vakri in a home sign feels personal.
- Mercury joins it in Tula from October 24. That's 21 days where both the planet of feelings (Venus) and the planet of words (Mercury) are in review mode.
- The Sun enters Tula on October 17 at 7:57 PM IST, where it is debilitated. On October 24 the Sun and Venus are conjunct, so Venus is combust.
Phaladeepika (Ch. 2, commentary) says a retrograde Venus is eclipsed when within 8 degrees of the Sun, and a retrograde Mercury within 12. Classical logic is simple: vakri gives strength, combustion takes away brightness. When both happen to Venus at once, the results are strong but muted. Feelings run deep, and clarity is low.
In plain words: you'll feel more, and see less clearly.
Love and Relationships: Venus Vakri Do's and Don'ts
Venus is the karaka (significator) of love and marriage. Phaladeepika (Ch. 2) says marriage, comforts and, in a male chart, the happiness of the wife are read through Venus. And BPHS (Ch. 3, v. 28) describes Shukra as charming, poetic and refined.
So when Shukra goes vakri, relationship themes loop back.
Say Neha, 29, in Pune. Her ex messages after two years. Venus vakri doesn't mean "get back together". It means an old chapter wants a proper ending, or a proper conversation.
Do:
- Have the pending conversation with your partner or family. Closure works well under vakri.
- Repair, apologise, forgive. This is what Venus reviewing relationships looks like.
- Use the rishta meetings to gather information, not to give a final yes.
- Revisit your own standards. What do you actually want from a partner?
Don't:
- Rush into a new relationship because the feelings are intense. Honestly, they may not survive margi.
- Quit a relationship or job in anger. Venus vakri magnifies hurt.
- Fix a wedding or engagement date inside the window if you can choose. Popular belief says wait, and many families do. Check with your family astrologer using both kundalis.
Already married or committed? Nothing here breaks your relationship. It just asks you to look at it honestly.
Money: Venus and Mercury Vakri Do's and Don'ts
Phaladeepika (Ch. 2) places "indulgence in all kinds of comforts and luxuries" under Venus, and intelligence and dexterity with Mercury. In everyday terms: Venus governs what you spend on, Mercury governs how you calculate and trade. Both in review mode means your money habits get a second look.
Here's the Indian-calendar catch. Dhanteras and Diwali buying fall in early November, right inside this window.
Say a father in Jaipur wants to buy a gold set before Dhanteras for his daughter's wedding in February. Is that wrong? No.
Gold as savings is fine. Gold as impulse, or as a status purchase, is what Venus vakri tends to expose.
Do:
- Audit your SIPs, subscriptions, EMIs and credit card dues.
- Collect pending payments and renegotiate deals.
- Buy what you've planned and budgeted for, not what you felt like in the shop.
- Compare quotes twice. Mercury vakri loves a calculation error.
Don't:
- Make big luxury purchases (new car, designer jewellery, major renovation) on impulse.
- Enter new partnerships or invest in something you don't understand.
- Lend money without a written note. Memory is a Mercury function, and it's under review.
Contracts and Work: Mercury Vakri Do's and Don'ts
Phaladeepika (Ch. 2) assigns Mercury learning, eloquence, dexterity in speech and intelligence. In practice, that includes agreements, emails, documents, travel bookings and software.
When Budh turns vakri on October 24, expect:
- Misread messages and email mix-ups
- Delays and re-routed plans
- Old contacts returning
- Terms you thought were final being reopened
Say a friend in Bengaluru has an offer letter pending. A flat buyer in Noida is waiting for registry. A freelancer has a client agreement ready. What should they do?
Do:
- Sign pending agreements before October 24 if they're ready and reviewed.
- Read every clause twice. Ask for a review period.
- Back up files. Double-check names, dates and amounts in documents.
- Use the 21 days for revising, finishing, editing, and renegotiating.
- Renewals and continuations are generally fine. They're existing commitments, not new ones.
Don't:
- Rush into brand-new deals, launches or big electronics purchases.
- Sign on a verbal promise. Get it in writing.
- Panic if you've already signed. It isn't doomed. Just track the paperwork.
Venus vs Mercury Vakri: Side-by-Side
| Venus (Shukra) vakri | Mercury (Budh) vakri | |
|---|---|---|
| Window | Oct 3 - Nov 14 (42 days) | Oct 24 - Nov 13 (21 days) |
| Governs | Love, marriage, comforts, money you spend | Speech, documents, trade, travel |
| Feels like | Old feelings resurface | Plans and messages get tangled |
| Best use | Repair, forgive, reassess values | Revise, edit, renegotiate |
| Avoid | New romances, luxury splurges | New deals, hurried signatures |
| Classical note | Strong by Chesta Bala; combust Oct 24 | Strong by Chesta Bala; slows decisions |
Who Feels It Most: Your Lagna and Tula
Parashara and Mantreswara both read a planet's results through the house it occupies. Both planets are moving in Tula. So the area of life they stir up depends on which house of your kundali Tula falls in.
| Your lagna | Tula is your | Area that gets replayed |
|---|---|---|
| Mesha (Aries) | 7th house | Marriage, partnerships |
| Vrishabha (Taurus) | 6th house | Work stress, debts, health routines |
| Mithuna (Gemini) | 5th house | Romance, creativity, children |
| Karka (Cancer) | 4th house | Home, mother, property |
| Simha (Leo) | 3rd house | Siblings, communication, short travel |
| Kanya (Virgo) | 2nd house | Money, family, speech |
| Tula (Libra) | 1st house | Self, health, image |
| Vrischika (Scorpio) | 12th house | Expenses, sleep, foreign links |
| Dhanu (Sagittarius) | 11th house | Income, friends, networks |
| Makara (Capricorn) | 10th house | Career, status |
| Kumbha (Aquarius) | 9th house | Luck, mentors, long travel |
| Meena (Pisces) | 8th house | Joint money, hidden matters |
If you're running a Venus or Mercury Mahadasha (major planetary period), or have either planet in your lagna, 7th or 2nd house, you'll likely feel it more. For everyone else, it's a quieter review.
Not sure of your lagna? Your kundali will tell you in seconds, including where Venus and Mercury sit. That's what we built turia for.
Simple Practices That Help
Shukra and Budh are the grahas of comfort and speech (Phaladeepika, Ch. 2), so simple habits around gratitude and clarity fit the mood. These are common folk practices, not classical prescriptions. None of this is mandatory.
- Fridays: Light a diya for Lakshmi, or donate white sweets. A Shukra habit rooted in gratitude.
- Wednesdays: Feed green grass or moong to a cow, or chant a Ganesha or Vishnu mantra for clarity.
- Daily: Keep a short journal of what you decided and why. Review it after November 14.
FAQ
Is it bad to sign a contract during Mercury retrograde?
Not automatically. Budh vakri favours review over new starts. Sign ready, vetted agreements before October 24. During the window, read twice, get everything in writing and keep copies. Renewals and ongoing commitments are generally fine. Brand-new deals, launches and big purchases are better after November 13.
Should I get back with my ex during Venus retrograde?
Use the contact for closure or a clear conversation, not an instant restart. Shukra vakri brings old feelings back with extra intensity. If it's still right after November 14, when Venus is margi, you'll know it wasn't just the retrograde talking.
Can I get engaged or married during Venus retrograde?
Many Indian families prefer to wait until Venus is margi, since Shukra governs marriage. It's a tradition and preference more than a fixed classical ban. If dates are fixed, consult an astrologer who can read both kundalis, dashas and the muhurat together.
Is it safe to buy gold on Dhanteras while Venus is retrograde?
Gold as savings or a planned family purchase is generally fine. What Shukra vakri warns against is impulse buying and overspending. Set a budget, compare prices, and avoid emotional purchases. If you can choose, a smaller purchase now and bigger one after November 14 is a sensible split.
Is retrograde good or bad in Vedic astrology?
Neither. Phaladeepika and the BPHS give a retrograde planet full motional strength (Chesta Bala). It's a planet that is strong but inward, slower and more demanding. The result still depends on your kundali, the house, the sign, and the running dasha.
Which signs are affected most by Venus and Mercury vakri?
Both planets are in Tula, so the effect depends on which house Tula falls in your kundali. Tula, Vrishabha, Mithuna and Kanya lagnas often feel it more, since Venus or Mercury rule them. Venus or Mercury mahadasha, or either planet in the 1st, 2nd or 7th house, also increases the impact.
Final Thoughts
So, when someone forwards "Don't sign, don't buy, don't propose" to you, here's the honest answer.
Finish what is ready before October 24. Review everything between October 24 and November 13. Hold the big decisions in love and money until Venus turns margi on November 14.
That's not fear. It's just good timing, and a little patience.
