Sharad Purnima 2026: Date, Moonrise, Kheer Under the Moon and the Astrology of the Brightest Full Moon

Sharad Purnima 2026: Date, Moonrise, Kheer Under the Moon and the Astrology of the Brightest Full Moon

Every year, the same argument starts in the family WhatsApp group.

"Is it the 25th or the 26th?"

Someone's mausi has already made the kheer. A cousin's calendar app shows a different day. And a sensible uncle asks if the Moon cares at all.

And this is where it gets interesting. Sharad Purnima is the one full Moon of the year that Indians treat as special, and the date confusion this time is real. In this guide, we'll settle the date, give you the timings, explain the 16 kalas and the Lakshmi vigil, show you how to do the kheer ritual, and look at what Jyotish actually says about this Moon.

Quick answer

Sharad Purnima is the Ashwin full-moon night when the Moon is said to shine with all 16 kalas, observed with kheer in moonlight, a Lakshmi puja and the Kojagara vigil. In 2026 the Purnima tithi runs from 11:55 AM on 25 October to 9:41 AM on 26 October (IST, Delhi). So the moon-night is Sunday, 25 October. Delhi moonrise is around 5:00 PM, and the Nishita puja window is 11:40 PM to 12:31 AM. The Moon sits in Ashwini that night.

Sharad Purnima 2026 Date: 25 or 26 October?

Sharad Purnima 2026 falls on the night of Sunday, 25 October. Monday, 26 October is the morning after, not the moon-night.

Here is why. A tithi is a lunar day. It starts and ends at exact Moon-Sun angles, not at sunrise. This Purnima starts when the Moon is 168 degrees ahead of the Sun and ends when the Moon is exactly 180 degrees ahead.

The classics treat that 180 degrees as the peak.

"When the Sun and the Moon are at a distance of 180° from each other, the benefics get one Rupa of strength. When they are together the benefics get no strength at all." — Phaladeepika, Ch. 4 (Kala Bala)

That exact moment lands at 9:41 AM on 26 October, when the Moon is below the horizon. Nobody can put kheer under it.

EventDate and time (IST, New Delhi)
Purnima tithi beginsSun, 25 Oct, 11:55 AM
MoonriseSun, 25 Oct, 5:00 PM
Nishita Kaal (Lakshmi puja)Sun, 25 Oct, 11:40 PM to 12:31 AM
Purnima tithi endsMon, 26 Oct, 9:41 AM
Purnima snan and daanMon, 26 Oct (daytime)

The rule for a Purnima night observance is simple: the tithi must be running at moonrise and at midnight. On 25 October it is. By the evening of 26 October, Pratipada has begun.

Some calendars show 26 October because the tithi is still running at sunrise that day. So the snan (holy bath), charity sit on the 26th. The kheer, the vigil and the Lakshmi puja belong to the 25th.

Both calendars can be "right". They are just answering different questions.

These are New Delhi timings from Drik Panchang. Other cities shift by minutes, and the city table below is also from Drik Panchang.

Moonrise and Kojagara Puja Timings by City

Moonrise is 5:00 PM in Delhi on 25 October. But the Sun sets around 5:42 PM, so you will actually see the Moon only after sunset.

The Nishita window is the middle of the night, when most households do the Lakshmi puja.

Chennai5:04 PM11:28 PM – 12:17 AM
Bengaluru5:15 PM11:39 PM – 12:28 AM

Many apps list moonrise four or five minutes earlier. Use your own city's panchang for the final minute.

Why does the night matter? Because of what the Moon stands for.

"The Moon is the signifier of the welfare of the mother, tranquility of the mind..." — Phaladeepika, Ch. 2

A night built around the Moon is, in Jyotish terms, a night built around the mind.

Why This Moon Is "Brightest": The 16 Kalas

The 16 kalas are the traditional sixteen "digits" of the Moon. Fifteen follow the tithis as the Moon grows. The sixteenth is the amrita kala, the nectar digit. Tradition says that on Sharad Purnima the Moon shows all sixteen.

The sky does not literally show you sixteen things. But the idea has a real classical backbone.

BPHS measures Moon strength by distance from the Sun. It is called Paksha Bala (fortnight strength).

"Deduct from Candr's longitude that of Sūrya. If the sum exceeds 6 Rāśis, deduct the same from 12..." — Brihat Parashara Hora Shastra, Ch. 27, v. 10-11

The further the Moon is from the Sun, up to six signs (180 degrees), the stronger the benefic. A commentary note under BPHS Ch. 3 adds the older Yavana view:

"Between 120 to 240 she is very auspicious..." — BPHS, Ch. 3, Santhanam's addition on the Yavana view

Full Moon sits in the middle of that band. Sharad Purnima is not a different kind of Moon. It is the Moon at the peak of Paksha Bala, in the season when the sky is cleanest.

The 16 kalas are the story. The clear autumn sky is the stage. Paksha Bala is the Jyotish reason the story fits.

Kojagara: The Night Lakshmi Asks "Who Is Awake?"

Kojagara comes from ko jagarti, "who is awake?" In Bengal it is Kojagori Lakshmi Puja. In Maharashtra it is Kojagiri. In Odisha it is Kumar Purnima.

The belief is simple. Goddess Lakshmi walks the earth on this night and blesses the homes that are awake and welcoming. Some traditions link the night to her emergence from the churning of the ocean.

BPHS itself introduces Lakshmi as a power of the Creator:

"The three powers are Śrī Shakti (Mother Lakshmi) with Sattva-Gun, Bhū Shakti (Mother-Earth) with Rajo-Gun and Nīl Shakti with Tamo-Gun." — BPHS, Ch. 1, v. 13-15

Notice the guna: Lakshmi comes with sattva, the calm and clear quality. Not noise. Not greed.

Other names: Kumar Purnima in Odisha and Raas Purnima in Braj.

Raas Purnima: Krishna, the Moon and the Gopis

According to the Puranas, this is the night of Krishna's Maha Raas with the gopis of Braj. Accounts appear in the Brahma, Skanda, Brahma Vaivarta and Linga Puranas.

Jyotish has a quiet link here that most articles skip.

"From Sūrya the incarnation of Ram, from Candr that of Krishn, from Mangal that of Narasimh..." — BPHS, Ch. 2, v. 5-7

Parashara says Krishna is the incarnation of Chandra. So the fullest Moon on the night of the Raas is not a random pairing. In the BPHS framework, the planet and its avatar meet on the same night.

One clarification. Raas Purnima in Braj is Sharad Purnima. The big Raas festivals of Assam and Manipur centre on Kartik Purnima, a month later.

Kheer Under the Moon: What to Do (and What Is Honest)

The kheer ritual is the part everyone remembers. Here is the simple version.

  1. Make the kheer in the afternoon or early evening. Milk, rice and sugar. Cardamom and saffron are optional.
  2. Use a clean vessel. Silver or bronze is traditional. Clean steel or glass is fine today.
  3. Place it in the Moon's light after moonrise. Keep it covered with a thin cloth or mesh. In a flat, a balcony or window ledge works.
  4. Keep it out a few hours. Many families bring it in at midnight.
  5. Offer it to the Moon and Lakshmi, then eat it as prasad. Many families eat the next morning. If the kheer smells or tastes off, throw it away.

Why rice and milk? The classics give a neat answer.

"Sun - Wheat, Moon – rice, Mars - Dhal, Mercury - Green Gram..." — Phaladeepika, Ch. 2

Rice belongs to the Moon. White, soft, watery foods belong to the Moon. Kheer is a Moon offering made of Moon things.

Now the honest part. I have not found any evidence that moonlight changes the chemistry or nutrition of kheer. Several websites claim big health benefits, without proof.

What is reasonable? Ayurvedic seasonal advice (ritucharya) treats Sharad as the time when summer's accumulated pitta (heat) gets provoked after the rains. It favours sweet, bitter, cooling foods and a bit of moonlight. A bowl of mild kheer on a cool autumn night fits that season. Keep it covered, and watch the sugar if you are diabetic.

Enjoy it as ritual. Don't treat it as medicine.

The Astrology of This Full Moon: Chandra, Ashwini and Revati

Chandra is the mind. That is not poetry. That is BPHS.

"Sūrya is the soul of all. Candr is the mind. Mangal is one's strength." — BPHS, Ch. 3, v. 12-13

Think of overthinking at 2 AM, replaying an argument with a relative. A full Moon is that pond with light on it. Everything is more visible, including the ripples. That is why a full-moon night is traditionally for stillness, prayer and gentle food, not big arguments.

Here is what the sky looks like on 25 October 2026 (sidereal, as used in Jyotish):

 PositionWhat it means
SunIn Tula (Libra), entered 17 OctThe Sun is debilitated here; ego is softer, balance is the lesson
MoonOpposite the Sun, in Mesha (Aries)Full Moon in Ashwini
NakshatraRevati until about 7:22 PM, then AshwiniMoon moves from the last to the first nakshatra

Revati is the last nakshatra, ruled by Mercury, the nakshatra of completion and safe journeys. Ashwini is the first, ruled by Ketu, and its deities are the Ashwini Kumaras, the divine physicians of the gods.

Notice the symbolism: an ending and a fresh start in one evening. The Ashwini Kumaras are healers, which suits a night of cooling kheer and rest.

This is a reading of the sky, not a rule from BPHS. If your Janma Nakshatra (birth star) is Ashwini or Revati, or your Moon sign is Aries or Pisces, you may feel this Moon more personally. Not as a prediction. Just as a reason to watch your own mind that night.

Mercury and Venus Retrograde: Wishing for Lakshmi, Reviewing Before Rushing

Two things are in the background this year. Venus has been retrograde since 3 October and turns direct on 14 November. Mercury turns retrograde on 24 October, just one day before Sharad Purnima.

Lakshmi wishes are usually about money, comfort and relationships. Venus rules those. Mercury rules contracts, accounts and paperwork. A retrograde asks you to review, not to panic.

Say someone plans to buy gold or book a property on Sharad Purnima "for Lakshmi". Check the paperwork twice. The night is for the prayer. The purchase can wait for a cleaner week.

What does BPHS say about Lakshmi in an actual kundali?

"If Dharm's Lord is in a Kendr identical with his Mooltrikon Rāśi, or own Rāśi, or in exaltation, while Lagn's Lord is endowed with strength, Lakshmi Yog occurs." — BPHS, Ch. 36, v. 27-28

Look closer, and it is the 9th lord (dharma) and the lagna lord (self) that make Lakshmi Yog. Not a single night. It is built slowly, by values and strength of character.

That is the honest Jyotish takeaway. The vigil is a prayer. The yoga is your life.

A Simple Plan for the Night of 25 October

You don't need to do everything. Pick what fits your home. One classical line helps you choose:

"The Sun represents the soul and the Moon the body." — Phaladeepika, Ch. 2

Kheer feeds the body. The quiet vigil settles the mind. Do both, lightly.

Time (Delhi)What to do
AfternoonPrepare the kheer, cover it, keep it cool
After sunset (about 5:45 PM)Step out and see the Moon. Offer water to the Moon
EveningPlace the kheer in the Moon's light, covered
11:40 PM – 12:31 AMLakshmi puja, lamp, a short aarti
Before bedBring the kheer in; refrigerate if warm
26 Oct morningEat the kheer as prasad; charity if you can

No terrace? A window works. Cloudy sky? The Moon is still there. Keep the intention.

So when someone asks, "Is it 25th or 26th?", the answer is easy. The night is the 25th. The morning after is the 26th.

Keep the kheer simple. Keep the night calm. And maybe put your phone down for ten minutes under that Moon.

If you want to know where your own Moon sits, you can look it up on Turia and see how Ashwini or Revati fits your kundali.

FAQ

Is Sharad Purnima on 25 or 26 October 2026?

The Sharad Purnima night is Sunday, 25 October 2026. The Purnima tithi runs from 11:55 AM on 25 October to 9:41 AM on 26 October (IST, New Delhi). Moonrise and the Nishita puja both fall while the tithi is on, on 25 October. The 26th is for the holy bath and charity.

What time should I keep kheer under the moon on Sharad Purnima 2026?

Place the covered kheer in the Moon's light after the Moon is visible, which in Delhi means after sunset at about 5:45 PM on 25 October. Many families bring it in around midnight or keep it a few hours. Eat it as prasad the next morning, and discard it if the smell or taste changes.

What is Kojagara (Kojagiri) Purnima?

Kojagara Purnima is another name for Sharad Purnima, from ko jagarti, meaning "who is awake?" Tradition says Goddess Lakshmi visits homes that stay awake and welcoming on this night. Families keep a vigil, do a Lakshmi puja in the Nishita window, and share moonlit kheer or masala milk.

Why is the Sharad Purnima Moon called the brightest, with 16 kalas?

Tradition says the Moon shows all 16 kalas (digits), including the amrita kala, on this night. Classically, BPHS gives the Moon its full Paksha Bala (fortnight strength) when it is six signs from the Sun. The post-monsoon autumn sky is also very clear, which is why the Moon appears sharper than usual.

Does kheer kept in moonlight really have health benefits?

There is no evidence that moonlight changes the nutrition of kheer. The practice is a tradition and a symbol: rice and milk belong to the Moon in Phaladeepika. Ayurvedic seasonal advice favours sweet, cooling foods in autumn, so a mild kheer fits the season. Keep it covered, and watch the sugar if you have diabetes.

Is Sharad Purnima the same as Raas Purnima?

In Braj, yes. Raas Purnima is the name used there for Sharad Purnima, the night of Krishna's Maha Raas with the gopis. In Assam and Manipur, the big Raas festivals are centred on Kartik Purnima, a month later. BPHS Ch. 2 also names Krishna as the incarnation of Chandra, the Moon.

What does the full Moon in Ashwini mean in astrology?

On 25 October 2026 the Moon moves from Revati into Ashwini around 7:22 PM, opposite the Sun in Libra. Ashwini is ruled by Ketu, with the Ashwini Kumaras as deities. Jyotish reads it as a night of fresh starts and healing. It is a reflection, not a prediction, and your own chart decides the personal effect.
