Every year, around this time, the same family argument starts.
Your brother wants to book the new car on Dussehra. Your mother says it is abujh muhurat, so no panchang is needed. Your aunt says Venus is retrograde, so wait.
All three of them are partly right. And honestly… this year the sky makes the argument sharper than usual.
This is where it helps to separate the festival from the planets. In this guide, we'll cover the date and Vijay Muhurat for 2026, why Dussehra is called an abujh muhurat, how to do shami puja and Ayudha Puja simply, and what the Sun in Tula and a retrograde Venus mean for whatever you plan to start.
Quick answer
Dussehra, also called Vijayadashami, is the tenth day (Dashami) of Sharad Navratri, observed on Tuesday, 20 October 2026. In New Delhi the Vijay Muhurat falls at 1:59 PM to 2:45 PM. Tradition counts it as an abujh muhurat, a day that needs no separate muhurat. In 2026 the Sun is debilitated in Tula and Venus is retrograde, so start with intention, and read contracts twice.
Dussehra 2026 date and Vijay Muhurat
Dussehra 2026 falls on Tuesday, 20 October. It closes Sharad Navratri, which began on 11 October. Navratri Vrat Parana (the fast-breaking meal) also falls on this day.
Here is the timeline for New Delhi. Times are in IST and can shift by a few minutes from city to city.
| What | Time (New Delhi, 20 Oct 2026) | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Navami tithi ends | 12:50 PM | Morning is still Navami, so Ayudha Puja fits here |
| Dashami tithi begins | 12:50 PM (ends 2:11 PM on 21 Oct) | Vijayadashami proper starts |
| Aparahna puja time | 1:14 PM to 3:30 PM | The afternoon window for the main rituals |
| Vijay Muhurat | 1:59 PM to 2:45 PM | The 45-minute peak for shami and Aparajita puja |
| Ravan Dahan | around sunset (roughly 5:30 PM to 6 PM) | Effigies burn after Ramlila |
Note: these are New Delhi timings from Drik Panchang. Please confirm with your local panchang for your own city.
Why the afternoon? The old rule is that Vijayadashami is observed in the Aparahna, the fourth part of the day (roughly 1 PM to 3:30 PM). Shravana nakshatra, the star traditionally paired with this day, also runs through the afternoon this year.
Classical Jyotish adds a small, quiet reason. Brihat Parashara Hora Shastra says some planets draw strength from daylight:
"The rest (i.e. Guru, Surya and Sukr) are strong only in daytime." — Brihat Parashara Hora Shastra, Ch. 3
So the afternoon puja is not just a rule. Surya and Guru, the planets of victory and wisdom, are literally at full strength while you light the lamp.
Why Dussehra is an abujh muhurat
An abujh muhurat (also swayam siddha muhurat) is a day that is auspicious in itself. You do not need to match the tithi, nakshatra and yoga for a fresh start. The day carries its own strength.
Tradition counts three and a half such days in the year, the Sade Teen Muhurat:
| # | Day | Usually associated with |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | Chaitra Shukla Pratipada (Gudi Padwa / Ugadi) | New year, new accounts |
| 2 | Akshaya Tritiya | Gold, new ventures |
| 3 | Vijayadashami (Dussehra) | Victory, tools, new learning |
| ½ | Kartik Shukla Pratipada (the day after Diwali) | Business new year in Gujarat |
Note: some lists name five abujh days and add Dhanteras or Diwali itself. Regional panchangs differ.
The logic is narrative, not mathematical. Tradition remembers Rama's victory over Ravana and Durga's victory over Mahishasura on this tithi. Vijay (victory) is baked into the day.
There is also a calendar reason. Dussehra falls in the bright half of the month. The same chapter of BPHS that lists planetary strengths says:
"During the dark half malefics are strong. Benefics acquire strength in the bright half of the month." — Brihat Parashara Hora Shastra, Ch. 3
Shukla Paksha Dashami sits squarely in that bright half. Fair enough, but BPHS and Phaladeepika do not list Vijayadashami as an abujh day. That idea comes from muhurta tradition and the panchang, not from the two classics.
So "no muhurat needed" is best read as: you are free to start today without hunting for a perfect hour. It is not a promise that every choice will work out.
Shami puja: the tree that held the weapons
The Shami (Prosopis cineraria, called Jammi in Telugu and Khejri in Rajasthan) is worshipped on Vijayadashami for one reason. In the Mahabharata, the Pandavas hid their weapons in a Shami tree for their year of hiding. On this day Arjuna took them back and went to war.
Preparation first, then action.
Here is a simple household version:
- Go to a Shami tree or keep a small branch at home.
- Offer water, kumkum, turmeric and a lamp.
- Recite the shloka "Shami shamayate papam, shami shatru-vinashini" three times. It means: the Shami quiets wrongdoing and destroys enemies.
- Walk around the tree once or three times.
- Take a few leaves home and put them in your wallet or puja space.
- Touch your elders' feet and offer them the leaves.
In Maharashtra, people exchange apta leaves as "gold" (sona). In Telangana and Andhra Pradesh, Jammi leaves are exchanged the same way.
There is a Jyotish thread here too. In the Navagraha havan list in BPHS, Shami wood is the fuel offered for Shani:
"Havan should be performed with Aak, Palash, Khair, Chirchiri, Pipal, Goolar, Shami wood pieces, Doob and Kush, for Surya, Candr, Mangal, Budh, Guru, Sukr, Sani, Rahu and Ketu." — Brihat Parashara Hora Shastra, Ch. 84, vv. 21-22 (Remedial Measures)
Read the order, and Shami lines up with Shani. Shani is the planet of time, discipline and the long game. A tree that kept weapons safe for a year is a very Shani-like thing to do.
Ayudha Puja: worshipping the tools of your work
Ayudha Puja (Astra Puja, Shastra Puja) is the worship of tools, books, instruments and vehicles. Ayudha means weapon, but today it covers the autorickshaw, the laptop, the sewing machine, the cricket bat and the school bag.
It is mainly celebrated in Karnataka, Tamil Nadu, Kerala and Andhra Pradesh, usually on Maha Navami, along with Saraswati Puja and Vidyarambham (a child's first letters).
For 2026, the date needs one line of care. Some South Indian panchangs place it on 19 October. Drik Panchang lists it on 20 October. Both can be right. In Delhi's panchang, Navami runs until 12:50 PM on 20 October, so it is the tithi at sunrise. Your local priest or panchang decides. If in doubt, do it on the morning of the 20th, before the Dashami tithi begins around 12:50 PM.
A practical version: clean the tools, vehicle or study desk, apply sandal paste and kumkum, offer a flower on each, light a lamp, and rest the tools for the day.
Jyotish has an easy way to read this ritual. Vehicles and property belong to the 4th house, the Bandhu Bhava:
"Conveyances, relatives, mother, happiness, treasure, lands and buildings are to be consulted through Bandhu Bhava." — Brihat Parashara Hora Shastra, Ch. 11, v. 5
Venus also rules comfort and vehicles in popular practice. Which brings us to the sky.
The astrology of Vijaya: Sun in Tula, Venus retrograde
Here is the sky on 20 October 2026, in short:
- Sun in Tula (Libra) since 17 October. This is its sign of debilitation (neecha).
- Venus retrograde from 3 October to 14 November. Venus is also the lord of Tula.
- Mercury turns retrograde on 24 October, four days after Dussehra.
Start with the Sun. BPHS puts it plainly:
"For the seven Grahas, from Surya on, the exaltation Rasis are, respectively, Mesh, Vrishabh, Makar, Kanya, Kark, Meen and Tula... And in the seventh Rasi from the said exaltation Rasi each Grah has its own debilitation." — Brihat Parashara Hora Shastra, Ch. 3, vv. 49-50
The Sun is exalted in Mesh (Aries), so it is debilitated in Tula, the seventh sign from there. The same chapter is blunt about the effect: "The good effects are nil in debilitation" (Ch. 3, vv. 59-60). Surya is the soul, authority and confidence, and "Surya is the soul of all" (Ch. 3, vv. 12-13). In Tula, the sign of balance and negotiation, that confidence tends to lean on other people's opinions.
In life, that looks like the colleague who wants everyone's approval before sending the proposal.
Now Venus. The popular idea is that retrograde equals "stop". The classical view is different. Phaladeepika treats a retrograde planet as strong:
"The other five non-luminous planets are strong when they are retrograde." — Phaladeepika (Mantreswara), Ch. 4
It adds that a debilitated planet is "vested with full strength if he is retrograde". These are rules for a kundali, not for transit forecasts, so treat them as a lens, not a verdict. The lens says: a retrograde Venus is not weak. It is turned inward. It asks you to review what you value, what you are paying for, and who you are committing to.
There is one more classical handle. The rule of Neechabhanga (cancellation of debilitation) says a debilitated planet recovers if the lord of its sign is placed well:
"If a planet is in his sign of debilitation, and is aspected by the lord of that sign, the debilitation gets cancelled…" — Phaladeepika, Ch. 7, v. 28
The Sun is in Venus's sign this month. Venus is the one to watch. For your own kundali, ask: where does Venus sit, and how strong is she? Your astrologer can tell you in two minutes.
| Planet | Status on 20 Oct 2026 | What it nudges | A grounded reading |
|---|---|---|---|
| Sun | Debilitated in Tula | Confidence, authority, ego | Do not rely on pride alone; seek counsel |
| Venus | Retrograde (3 Oct to 14 Nov) | Money, relationships, luxury | Review before you commit |
| Mercury | Turns retrograde 24 Oct | Contracts, travel, paperwork | Finish paperwork by 23 Oct |
None of this cancels Dussehra. It tells you how to use it.
What to start, and what to go slow on
Dussehra's strength is that it supports a beginning. Phaladeepika (Ch. 4) calls a retrograde Venus strong, only turned inward, which is why review, not retreat, is the right reading. The sky's message is to begin things that are reversible, or to make sure the paperwork is clean.
| Better to start on 20 October | Better to go slow or review |
|---|---|
| Learning: a course, a language, a child's Vidyarambham | Signing a long contract with a vague clause |
| Puja and cleaning of tools, laptop, vehicle | Buying luxury items on EMI you have not priced |
| A new routine: gym, study hours, a daily lamp | Big-ticket property purchase without a second look at the papers |
| Forgiveness, a call you were postponing | Proving a point in a family argument |
A shopkeeper in Lajpat Nagar can do shastra puja on his billing counter and still wait three weeks to sign the new lease. A couple can book a car on Dussehra and take delivery only after reading the finance papers.
The question of gold and vehicles comes up every year. The short answer: Dussehra is good for the intention and the booking. Venus retrograde from 3 October to 14 November makes a case for patience on the bigger commitments, so compare prices and read the terms. Many families split the difference: a small coin today, the real purchase after 14 November.
A simple plan for 20 October
Here is a plan that fits a regular working household. It keeps the main rituals in daylight, when BPHS (Ch. 3) says Surya, Guru and Sukr are strong.
- Morning (before 12:50 PM): Do Ayudha Puja. Clean and garland your tools, books, laptop and vehicle. Navami is still on.
- Around 1:15 PM to 1:55 PM: Eat lunch, prepare the puja thali. Draw the eight-petal lotus with rice flour for Aparajita puja (blue flowers if you can find them, and the mantra Om Aparajitayai Namah 11 or 21 times).
- 1:59 PM to 2:45 PM (Vijay Muhurat): Do shami puja. Take the leaves. Start the thing you have been postponing: send the application, begin the first lesson, make the call.
- Late afternoon: Visit elders. Exchange leaves and sweets (jalebi-fafda, if you are Gujarati).
- Sunset: Ravan Dahan at the local Ramlila, if you want the spectacle. If you cannot, light one lamp at home.
Missed the exact window? The wider Aparahna period (1:14 PM to 3:30 PM) is fine.
A practical way to close
So when someone asks, "Is Dussehra auspicious this year?", the answer is yes. The day is strong and the tradition is old.
And when someone adds, "But Venus is retrograde and the Sun is debilitated", the answer is still yes, with care. Begin the work, bless the tools, read the papers. If you want to know how this Tula Sun and retrograde Venus sit in your own kundali, that is the sort of timing question we built Turia to answer.
FAQ
When is Dussehra in 2026?
Dussehra (Vijayadashami) falls on Tuesday, 20 October 2026. It is the tenth day of Sharad Navratri, which began on 11 October. Dashami tithi begins at 12:50 PM on 20 October and runs till 2:11 PM on 21 October. Navratri Vrat Parana is also on 20 October.
What is the Vijay Muhurat for Dussehra 2026?
In New Delhi, the Vijay Muhurat is 1:59 PM to 2:45 PM on 20 October 2026. The wider Aparahna puja time runs 1:14 PM to 3:30 PM. Times differ by a few minutes in other cities, so check your local panchang before the puja.
Why is Dussehra an abujh muhurat?
Tradition counts Vijayadashami among the three and a half Sade Teen Muhurat, days considered auspicious on their own. Rama's victory over Ravana and Durga's victory over Mahishasura are tied to the tenth tithi. The idea comes from muhurta tradition, not from BPHS or Phaladeepika, and regional lists vary.
What is shami puja and how is it done?
Shami puja is the worship of the Shami tree on Vijayadashami, linked to the Pandavas hiding their weapons in it. Offer water, kumkum, turmeric and a lamp. Chant "Shami shamayate papam, shami shatru-vinashini" three times, walk around the tree, and take a few leaves home. Exchange them with elders as "gold".
When is Ayudha Puja in 2026?
Ayudha Puja is held on Maha Navami in South India, with Dussehra the next day. Some calendars list 19 October. Drik Panchang lists it on 20 October. Since Navami runs until 12:50 PM on 20 October in Delhi, the morning of the 20th also works. Follow your local panchang.
Can I buy a car or gold on Dussehra 2026 with Venus retrograde?
Yes, but plan it. Dussehra is an abujh muhurat, so booking is fine. Venus is retrograde from 3 October to 14 November, so many astrologers advise comparing prices, reading terms, and avoiding rushed luxury purchases. Booking now and buying the larger piece after 14 November is a common middle path.
Does the Sun being debilitated in Tula spoil Dussehra?
No. The Sun is debilitated in Tula from 17 October, but Dussehra's strength comes from the tithi, the Aparahna time and the tradition. BPHS says a debilitated planet gives weak results in a kundali, so the transit is a reminder to seek advice and avoid ego-driven decisions, not a reason to skip the puja.
