Durga Ashtami and Maha Navami 2026: Date, Puja Vidhi, Kanya Pujan, Sandhi Puja and the Astrology of Shakti

Durga Ashtami and Maha Navami 2026: Date, Puja Vidhi, Kanya Pujan, Sandhi Puja and the Astrology of Shakti

Every year, around Ashtami, the same family WhatsApp argument starts.

"Is it Ashtami today or tomorrow? Is Navami also today? When do we call the kanyas?"

Your mother checks one calendar. Your aunt checks another. The pandit says a third thing. And the tithi, honestly, doesn't care about any of them.

And this is where 2026 gets interesting. Ashtami and Navami are packed tightly together on Monday, October 19, with Navami spilling into Tuesday morning. In this guide, we'll sort out the dates and timings, walk through Ashtami puja vidhi, Sandhi Puja, kanya pujan and Maha Navami, and then look at what a kundali says about Shakti.

Quick answer

Durga Ashtami 2026 is on Monday, October 19. In New Delhi, Ashtami ends at 10:51 AM and Navami begins right then, running till 12:50 PM on October 20. Sandhi Puja is 10:27 to 11:15 AM on October 19. Do kanya pujan on the morning of October 19. Do Navami havan on October 19 or the morning of October 20. Dussehra follows on October 20. Check your city's panchang.

Durga Ashtami and Maha Navami 2026: Dates and Timings

Here are the timings for New Delhi (IST). Tithi times shift by city, so treat these as a guide.

WhatDateTime (New Delhi)
Ashtami tithi beginsSunday, Oct 188:27 AM
Ashtami tithi endsMonday, Oct 1910:51 AM
Sandhi PujaMonday, Oct 1910:27 AM to 11:15 AM
Navami tithi beginsMonday, Oct 1910:51 AM
Navami tithi endsTuesday, Oct 2012:50 PM
Dussehra (Vijayadashami)Tuesday, Oct 20Dashami begins after Navami ends

Now the confusion. Sunrise on October 19 falls inside Ashtami. Sunrise on October 20 falls inside Navami. By the sunrise rule, then, Ashtami is October 19 and Navami is October 20.

But Navami also begins on October 19 at 10:51 AM. That is why Drik Panchang lists both Durga Ashtami and Maha Navami on the 19th, while calendars following the Bengal rule place Navami on the 20th.

Both are defensible. Here is a simple way to settle it:

  • Ashtami rituals, kanya pujan, Sandhi Puja: October 19. No debate.
  • Navami puja and havan: October 19 afternoon, or October 20 before 12:50 PM. Pick one and follow your family's parampara.
  • Fast ending (parana): ask your pandit or family elder. Many families break it after the Navami havan.

A tithi is simply the Moon gaining 12 degrees on the Sun. That is why the Moon matters so much here. Phaladeepika (Ch. 2, v. 15) gives the Moon "jurisdiction over the temple of Goddess Durga, places inhabited by women". The Moon sets the clock for the festival, and the Goddess sits in the Moon's house.

What Ashtami and Maha Navami Actually Mean

Navratri has nine nights and nine forms of Durga. The eighth day is Mahagauri, the calm, fair, white-clad form. The ninth is Siddhidatri, the giver of siddhis (accomplishments).

The Devi Mahatmya story explains the shift in mood. The first days are about building discipline. Ashtami is where the battle peaks. According to tradition, Goddess Chamunda destroyed the demons Chanda and Munda at the exact junction of Ashtami and Navami. Navami closes the battle. Dashami (Dussehra) is victory.

That is why Ashtami feels intense and Navami feels like a release.

So for most North Indian households, Ashtami is the big day for fasting, kanya pujan and Durga puja. For Bengal and Odisha, it is the heart of Durga Puja, with Sandhi Puja as its climax.

Durga Ashtami Puja Vidhi: What to Do on October 19

Keep it simple. A sincere short puja beats an exhausting long one.

  1. Wake early and bathe. Wear clean clothes; red or yellow works well.
  2. Clean the mandir. Light a diya, spread a red cloth and place the Durga idol or image.
  3. Take a sankalp. Say your name, gotra if you know it, and your intention in a sentence. For example, "for peace and health in my family."
  4. Offer the basics. Red flowers (hibiscus is traditional), roli, akshat, a red chunri, fruit and sweets.
  5. Chant. Om Dum Durgayai Namah is the simplest. If you have time, read the Durga Saptashati or at least the Argala Stotram and Kavacham. The Durga Chalisa also works.
  6. Mahagauri mantra: Shvete Vrishe Samarudha Shvetambaradhara Shuchih. Mahagauri Shubham Dadyan Mahadeva Pramodada.
  7. Aarti and bhog. Offer halwa, chana and poori, then distribute.

Do the main puja before 10:51 AM if you want it inside Ashtami proper.

On fasting: if you have diabetes, BP issues, pregnancy or any health condition, skip the strict fast and eat sattvic. The Devi does not want you in hospital. This is not weakness. It is sense.

Sandhi Puja 2026: The 48-Minute Window

Sandhi means junction. Sandhi Puja is the worship done at the exact moment Ashtami turns into Navami.

The window is the last 24 minutes of Ashtami plus the first 24 minutes of Navami. In New Delhi, that is 10:27 AM to 11:15 AM on October 19. These are New Delhi timings from Drik Panchang; other cities differ by a few minutes.

In Bengal, this is when 108 lotuses and 108 diyas are offered to the Goddess. At home, you don't need 108 of anything. Here is a practical version:

  • Light one ghee diya (or 9 if you wish) at the start of the window.
  • Offer one red flower, ideally hibiscus.
  • Chant Om Aim Hreem Kleem Chamundaye Vichche 108 times with a mala.
  • Do a short aarti and bow.

Honestly, the minute-level precision matters less than the attention. But if your family keeps the tradition, be seated before 10:27.

Kanya Pujan: How to Do It Properly

Kanya pujan means worshipping young girls as living forms of the Goddess. It is the most loved ritual of these days. Also the most stressful, because everyone has to find nine girls.

When: Ashtami morning (after your puja and before or around 10:51 AM) is the most common choice. Some families do it on Navami instead. Either works. Just keep your family's practice.

Who: Traditionally nine girls, aged roughly 2 to 10, plus one boy as langur (Bhairav). If you only find five or three, that is fine. Even one girl, honoured with love, is a complete kanya pujan.

How:

  1. Invite the girls the evening before, so they are ready and in a good mood.
  2. Wash their feet gently with clean water and dry them.
  3. Apply a red tilak and tie a kalava (red-yellow thread) on the wrist.
  4. Seat them and serve the prasad: sooji halwa, kala chana and poori, cooked without onion or garlic.
  5. Let them eat first. Keep it unhurried.
  6. Give a small gift and dakshina, touch their feet and ask for blessings.

A tip for apartment living: ask neighbours a day ahead, through the society WhatsApp group if needed, and say clearly it is a short visit.

And don't turn it into a photo opportunity. A child who is hungry, tired or shy is still a child. Treat her like the Devi you are inviting: with patience.

Maha Navami: Havan, Ayudha Puja and the Last Day of Navratri

Navami is the day of completion. Siddhidatri is worshipped, and the nine days of discipline are sealed with a havan.

Navami havan: Light a small havan kund with mango wood, ghee, sesame and camphor. Offer 9 or 108 ahutis with Om Dum Durgayai Swaha. Finish with a coconut and the aarti. The timing runs from 10:51 AM on October 19 to 12:50 PM on October 20.

Ayudha Puja: In South and West India, tools, books, vehicles and machines are cleaned and worshipped on Navami. The student keeps her notebooks, the shopkeeper his account books. Honouring the tools of your work is the point.

Parana: After the Navami havan, many families end the fast with a sattvik meal. Dashami begins after 12:50 PM on October 20. If unsure, ask your family pandit.

One nuance from muhurta shastra: Navami is a Rikta (empty) tithi, so it is normally avoided for fresh worldly starts like signing a deal or buying property. But as the Devi's own tithi, it is excellent for sadhana, havan and finishing things. Complete, don't begin.

The Astrology of Shakti: What Your Kundali Says

Now the Jyotish layer. Let me be clear: this is a framework for reflection, not a guarantee. A kundali shows tendencies. Practice is your choice.

Brihat Parashara Hora Shastra (Ch. 2, v. 3-7) says the Lord "incarnated as the 9 (Nava) Grahas to bestow on the living beings the results due to their Karmas" and took graha-form "to destroy the demons (evil forces) and sustain the divine beings". Mars is the Narasimha form, the fierce protector. So in Jyotish the grahas are already the Devi's operating system: forces of protection, nourishment and consequence.

Four grahas carry the Shakti energy most clearly:

GrahaShakti principleWhat it shows in a kundaliClassical hint
Moon (Chandra)The nurturing motherEmotional security, relationship with mother, peace of mindPhaladeepika Ch. 2: Moon rules the Durga temple. BPHS Ch. 33: Moon + Ketu in the 12th from Karakamsa marks a Gauri worshipper
Mars (Mangal)The warrior, protectionCourage, stamina, ability to fight for yourselfBPHS Ch. 2: Mars is Narasimha, protector
Venus (Shukra)Beauty, Lakshmi, graceMarriage, comfort, the feminine in your lifeBPHS Ch. 57: Durga Saptashati for Venus as lord of 2nd/7th
RahuThe fierce, unconventional forceObsession, foreign, sudden shiftsBPHS Ch. 33: Rahu in the 12th from Karakamsa leans towards Durga worship; Ch. 52 (v. 30-31) prescribes Durga worship when Rahu troubles the 2nd or 7th

Look at your own kundali:

  • A pressured Moon: anxiety, mood swings, strain with the mother. BPHS Ch. 56 (v. 64) names Durga Saptashati Path as the remedy when the Moon, as lord of the 2nd or 7th, gives distress. In practice, a quiet daily routine of chanting.
  • A strong Mars with no outlet: short temper, restlessness. Ashtami's energy is about channeled force. Exercise, discipline, serving someone.
  • Venus under pressure: delays or friction in marriage and relationships. Many families do kanya pujan with exactly this hope. Take it as a reminder to honour the women in your life, not just on Ashtami.
  • Rahu-heavy kundali: feeling pulled in many directions. The Goddess worship is classically linked to Rahu for a reason: it gives structure to restlessness.

None of this is fear. It is a map of where Shakti already works in your life, and where she needs attention.

This is honestly what we try to do at Turia too: use the kundali as a map, then ask what practice follows.

The Sky on October 19, 2026

A brief look at the backdrop.

  • Sun in Libra (Tula): The Sun enters Libra on October 17 and is debilitated there. BPHS Ch. 3 (v. 49-50) says each graha is debilitated in the seventh sign from its exaltation, and the Sun is exalted in Aries. The Sun is about ego and authority. Debilitated, it asks you to soften the ego. The Devi worship fits that mood.
  • Jupiter in Cancer: Jupiter stays exalted until October 31, when it moves into Leo. Guidance and grace are well placed these days.

Use this as context, not prediction.

FAQ

Is Durga Ashtami on October 19 or 20, 2026?

Durga Ashtami is on Monday, October 19, 2026. In New Delhi, the Ashtami tithi ends at 10:51 AM that day, and Navami begins immediately after. Because panchang timings vary by city, confirm the exact tithi times in your local panchang before you start your puja.

Is Maha Navami also on October 19?

Navami begins at 10:51 AM on October 19 and ends at 12:50 PM on October 20 in New Delhi. Many calendars list Maha Navami on October 19, while others, going by sunrise, list October 20. Follow your family's tradition or ask your pandit.

What is the Sandhi Puja time in 2026?

In New Delhi, Sandhi Puja is from 10:27 AM to 11:15 AM on October 19, 2026. This 48-minute window covers the last 24 minutes of Ashtami and the first 24 minutes of Navami. Other cities differ by a few minutes, so check your local panchang.

Should I do kanya pujan on Ashtami or Navami?

Both are accepted. Most North Indian families do it on Ashtami morning, which is October 19 this year. If Navami is your family's tradition, do it that day instead. What matters is that the girls are honoured with patience and a proper meal.

How many girls are needed for kanya pujan?

Traditionally nine girls (one for each form of Durga), aged roughly 2 to 10, plus one boy as langur. If you cannot find nine, invite as many as you can. Even one girl, welcomed with respect and fed with love, makes the pujan complete.

Which planet is linked to Goddess Durga?

There is no single planet. The Moon is the mother-graha, and Phaladeepika gives it jurisdiction over the Durga temple. Mars is the protector, Venus the grace of Lakshmi, and BPHS links Rahu with Durga worship. Different texts and traditions map the nine forms to different grahas.

So, What Should You Actually Do on October 19?

If you only have time for a few things, here is the plan:

  1. Bathe, light a diya and do a short Durga puja before 10:51 AM.
  2. Be seated for Sandhi Puja from 10:27 AM.
  3. Do kanya pujan, even with just one or two girls.
  4. Do a small havan on Navami, October 19 afternoon or October 20 morning.

Then check the panchang for your city, because those few minutes of difference are real. And remember that the point of these two days is not perfection. It is showing up with sincerity, doing one thing well, and letting the Shakti you worship remind you of the Shakti you already carry.

Hope this gives you a clearer picture.
