The twelve signs
of Jyotish
"From Mesha the Ram to Meena the Fishes, the twelve rashis divide the zodiac into twelve temperaments." Each sign carries an element, a ruling planet and a distinct nature.
Twelve signs, twelve temperaments. Each rashi spans thirty degrees of the zodiac and takes its character from its ruling planet, its element and its modality. In Vedic astrology your Moon sign (Janma Rashi) matters most. Pick a sign to read its full guide - what it means, how its ruler shapes the personality, the nakshatras within it, and which signs it matches.
What a 'rashi' actually means in Vedic astrology
A rashi (zodiac sign) is a thirty-degree slice of the sidereal zodiac. Each sign is owned by a planet, belongs to one of the four elements, and behaves according to its modality. Those three facts, ruler, element and modality, tell you most of a sign's temperament before you look at anything else.
Vedic astrology reads your Moon sign (Janma Rashi) as the seat of the mind, which is why daily horoscopes are based on it rather than the Sun sign. The same twelve signs also form the framework of the houses once your ascendant is known.
Aries, Leo, Sagittarius — drive, courage and the will to act. Warm, direct and quick to move.
Taurus, Virgo, Capricorn — stability, patience and practicality. Builders who value the tangible.
Gemini, Libra, Aquarius — intellect, communication and connection. Ideas over instinct.
Cancer, Scorpio, Pisces — emotion, intuition and depth. Feeling comes before logic.
