The area colours

Each of the 11 areas gets a colour, from how the two of you compare in that area.

Green
Strong in both kundalis. A solid base for this area.
Amber
Weak in one kundali, strong in the other. The strong one carries it. It works best when both of you know it.
Red
Weak in both kundalis, so nobody carries this area. It is the one to look at closely, not a verdict.

Gun Milan and Manglik status are shown beside the score. They are never mixed into it.

The six bands

Effortless
Your charts support each other in almost every area that matters.
Well matched
Most areas are strong in both of you. Where one of you is weak, the other leads.
Balanced

Takes effort
Many areas are weak in one of you, so the other has to lead. It can work, with steady effort from both.

Uphill

The names describe how much effort a match will take. They don't say whether it will work.

Gun Milan reads birth stars and Moon signs, and 13 is below the traditional mark of 18 there. The Kundali Milan Score reads 11 areas of both kundalis, and most are strong in both. In this couple, communication is weak in both, and personality compatibility is carried by one partner. That is why the two numbers can differ.

Guna Milan explained: the 8 kootas and the 36-point score

Gun Milan (also called Guna Milan or Ashtakoot Milan) is the traditional way families check a match. It compares the birth star (nakshatra) and Moon sign of both people across eight areas called kootas. Together they carry 36 points. Bhakoot and Nadi alone carry 15 of them, which is why their doshas worry families most.

KootaPointsWhat it looks atIn plain words
Varna1Ego and outlookWhether you can respect each other's way of doing things
Vashya2Mutual pull and influenceWhether one leads, or you bend to each other
Tara3Birth-star harmonyHow each person's star treats the other; linked to wellbeing
Yoni4Physical and intimate fitComfort and chemistry
Graha Maitri5Friendship of the Moon-sign lordsHow you think and talk together
Gana6Basic temperamentWhether your natures sit easily side by side
Bhakoot7Emotional bond and Moon-sign distanceCloseness, and tradition's view of family welfare
Nadi8Nadi type from the nakshatraTraditionally, health of the couple and children
Total36

Each koota compares the birth star or Moon sign of the two people. Points are given in full or in part for each koota, then added up to a score out of 36.

How to read the 36-point score

ScoreTraditional readingA fair way to read it
Under 18Not usually advisedBelow the traditional mark. Many families pause here. Others look at both kundalis in full first, which is reasonable.
18 to 24AcceptablePasses the traditional mark. A workable start. Check which kootas lost points.
Above 24, up to 32GoodA good score on the traditional count.
Above 32, up to 36Very goodA very high score. Lovely to see. Check the Kundali Milan Score beside it.

How many gunas should match?

Traditionally, 18 or more. Families often like to see 24 or above, and still read the doshas separately, since Nadi and Bhakoot can take away 15 points between them.

Is 18 gunas good?

18 is the traditional minimum, the pass mark. It means the match is acceptable on the traditional count. In the 2020 study, about 73% of still-married couples and 73% of divorced couples scored above 18. So treat 18 as the start of the check, and check both.

Doshas in Kundali Milan: Nadi, Bhakoot and Manglik

Doshas are the part of matching that worries families most. A dosha is a flagged difficulty, not a sentence, and each is read with the rest of the kundali.

8 points

Nadi dosha

Nadi is the biggest koota, at 8 points. Every nakshatra belongs to one of three Nadis: Aadi, Madhya or Antya. If both of you share the same one, that is Nadi dosha, and the koota scores 0 of 8. There are only three Nadis, so for two people picked at random, about one pair in three shares one. Families worry because tradition ties Nadi to the health of the couple and their children, and because losing 8 points lowers the total.

The calm view: weigh Nadi with the rest of both kundalis, and don't let it decide alone.

7 points

Bhakoot dosha

Bhakoot is 7 points and depends on how far apart your Moon signs sit. The dosha forms when they are 2 and 12, 5 and 9, or 6 and 8 signs apart. Tradition links it to emotional bond, family welfare and shared prosperity.

The calm view: Bhakoot is one koota of eight. Read it with the other seven, and with the Kundali Milan Score.

Mars

Manglik dosha

You are Manglik when Mars sits in certain houses of the chart, the 1st, 2nd, 4th, 7th, 8th or 12th, counted from the ascendant, the Moon or Venus. Tradition links it to friction in marriage, so families take it seriously.

The calm view: Manglik is a common placement, and it is read together with the whole kundali, not alone.

FAQ

Kundali Milan questions, answered

Still have a question?[email protected]
What is a good Kundali Milan score, and is 18 out of 36 gunas enough?

On the traditional count, 18 out of 36 is the minimum. 18 to 24 is acceptable, above 24 up to 32 is good, and above 32 up to 36 is very good. A score above 18 is where the check starts. In a 2020 PhD study of about 840 North Indian couples, about 73% of still-married and 73% of divorced couples scored above 18. Check both: Gun Milan and the Kundali Milan Score.

Can two people score well on Gun Milan and still have a weak area?

Yes. Gun Milan matches birth stars and Moon signs. The Kundali Milan Score reads both full kundalis across 11 areas, including communication, in-laws and money. A couple can score 30 out of 36 on Gun Milan and still be weak in the same area in both kundalis. The Kundali Milan Score flags that area. That is why it helps to check both.

Can a Manglik marry a non-Manglik?

Traditionally, families prefer to match a Manglik with a Manglik. Manglik is a common placement, and families often read the whole kundali before deciding. Manglik status for both partners is shown beside the score, as one part of the picture, not the whole of it.

What does Manglik mean?

Manglik means Mars sits in certain houses of the chart, the 1st, 2nd, 4th, 7th, 8th or 12th, counted from the ascendant, the Moon or Venus. Tradition links it to friction in marriage. It is always read with the rest of the kundali.

Is it okay to marry with Nadi dosha?

That is your family's call, and Nadi dosha is not the whole story. In the 2020 study, Nadi dosha appeared in 27% of still-married and 30% of divorced couples. Weigh it, and read the rest of both kundalis.

What is Bhakoot dosha, and does it always cancel a match?

Bhakoot dosha forms when the two Moon signs sit 2 and 12, 5 and 9, or 6 and 8 signs apart. It costs the full 7 points. It doesn't cancel a match on its own. In the 2020 study it was slightly more common among still-married couples (51% against 47%).

Is Kundali Milan by name as accurate as by date of birth?

No. Matching by name can only guess the Moon nakshatra, so it gives a rough Gun Milan at best. It can't see houses or the D9. Even a date of birth without the exact time can't give a real kundali. That is why the Kundali Milan Score asks for the exact birth time and place, for both of you.

Is AI-based or online Kundali matching accurate?

No astrology tool is 100% accurate. The Kundali Milan Score is computed by software from classical Parashari rules, the same way every time. It shows where the two of you suit and where you don't, across 11 areas. It cannot promise a happy marriage, and no chart can.
